Behind the Badge: Officer Martinez

After spending just over four years in another agency, Officer Marcus Martinez found his way to Celina, Texas. Officer Martinez, who is an avid fan of his new uniform item, the cowboy hat, currently serves on the Alpha Day Shift here in Celina. We sat down to discuss what brought him to Celina and learn a little more.

Where are you from originally? What brought you to Celina?

I'm an Army brat. I spent most of my time in Texas, Oklahoma, and New Jersey. I came to Celina for a career and a great place to raise my family.

What was the motivation behind becoming a law enforcement officer?

I found myself at a crossroads for a career choice and looked into law enforcement as an option. I really liked the idea of helping people in various situations. I like that the dynamic work environment and not knowing what you will be called to next.

It’s lunch time in Celina, and you haven’t eaten. What’s on the menu?

Oooh - this is a tough one. So many great choices. My heart is with Toasted Walnut. It was the first place I went to when I arrived for my interview with Celina PD and it just felt like home.

What is one of the most memorable experiences you've had on patrol?

One day, I had a suicide call. It was my first one and I was worried about how this is going to play out. Once on the scene, I learned that the caller was an Army Engineer. I immediately introduced myself as an Army Engineer as well started a dialogue with the distraught man. When he realized I was able to connect with him on another level, soldier to soldier, and not cop to civilian, he opened up and we talked about some of the issues. He agreed to drop his knife, and he agreed to be transported to the hospital for an evaluation and treatment. It was a great feeling to help someone when they were at their lowest point and offer real help on the spot.

If you had to describe Celina in one sentence, what would you say?

"Welcome Home!"

What are you most looking forward to in your time with Celina?

Getting to know the people, and experiencing all that it has to offer. My family and I are eager to be part of what makes Celina unique, making friends who will feel like family.

What does a typical day off look like for you?

Mostly, I relax with my family. Usually, I'm driving my son to sport practices. Recently, my wife and I have taken up line dancing. I'm looking forward to exploring Celina and, of course, Texas in general.

Cowboy hat or baseball cap?

100% cowboy hat. I love that it is part of the uniform.

Coffee order?

Just black.

A movie is being filmed about your life. Who is the star that plays YOU?

There are so many handsome bald actors to choose from... LOL.

Favorite sports team?

Any team that my son is playing for! This year, it's Celina JV Hockey.
